Hamels hopes for happy homecoming as Phils take on Padres

07/19/2007 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - A great pitching matchup is on tap this evening at Petco Park, where Chris Young and the San Diego Padres host Cole Hamels and the Philadelphia Phillies in the first of four games out west.

The All-Star Young is 8-3 this season with a major league-best 1.97 ERA in 18 starts. He hasn't lost since a May 12 encounter with the St. Louis Cardinals and is 4-0 over 10 starts since then. He last toed the rubber on Saturday against Arizona and did not post a decision, despite yielding just one run over six innings of a 5-4 setback.

The righty is 3-1 in eight home starts in 2007 and will face Philadelphia for the second time in his career. Young lost his only appearance against the Phillies on June 8, 2005 after giving up two runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings of a 2-0 loss at Citizens Bank Park.

Hamels will shoot for his third straight win today and owns an 11-4 mark with a 3.83 ERA in 19 starts this season. He is 2-0 with a 3.46 ERA over his last two starts and defeated St. Louis the last time out on Saturday. He allowed four runs and eight hits over six innings during a 10-4 victory over the Cardinals at Citizens Bank Park.

Hamels is one win shy of tying Chicago Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano for the most wins in the National League this season. Three other American League pitchers top the majors with 12 wins as well.

The All-Star left-hander, who is 5-2 in 10 road starts this season, has no record with a 4.70 earned run average in two career starts against San Diego. Hamels is a native of San Diego and among the league leaders with 126 strikeouts this season.

San Diego has won three of its last four games and took two of three from the New York Mets at Petco Park coming into this set. In Wednesday's series finale, Geoff Blum hit an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to put the Padres ahead for good and Milton Bradley hit his first homer for his new team.

Bradley was acquired from the Oakland Athletics along with cash considerations in exchange for pitcher Andrew Brown on June 29.

Adrian Gonzalez also homered for the Padres, who are one game behind the rival Los Angeles Dodgers for the top spot in the National League West division.

Meanwhile, the Phillies have dropped three of their last four games, including Wednesday afternoon's 5-4 loss to the Dodgers at Chavez Ravine. Ryan Howard homered for the third time in his last two games and finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored for the Phillies, who are five games behind the NL East- leading Mets.

Rookie pitcher Kyle Kendrick suffered the first loss of his young career after giving up five runs on seven hits through 5 1/3 innings for Philadelphia.

San Diego and Philadelphia are meeting for the first time since the Padres won four of six games during the 2006 campaign. The Phillies are 13-5 in their last 18 matchups with San Diego.
